Welcome to the Engineering Teachers Resource Site.

What's it all about?

Picture
The aim of the site is to bring together in one location free resources to support the teaching of Engineering subjects.

Initially this will be learning objects that I have produced, but hopefully other colleagues will be willing to share theirs too.

The
Resource area will develop, this is initially limited to subjects that I have taught in the last year or two.

Please note: these materials do not pretend to be of a commercial standard, but feel free to use and modify as you see fit.

I will build a set of
links to sites that I visit frequently and would be grateful for information about others that we can all share.

All of these resources are 'home produced' mostly using software that we all have access to.  I will also be building up the "
How To" area, demonstrating how simple interactive materials can be developed using Microsoft applications.

For those that are interested, I have included a section on the
college where I work.

Boring Stuff

About me
I taught Engineering at a number of Technical Colleges in the United Kingdom before moving to my current job in the United Arab Emirates in 2005.

About my Job
Teaching the students here brings a unique set of challenges.  English language is the medium we use to teach Engineering to our students, however their English language knowledge and skills develop as they progress through our system.  This means that initially the use of images and animations along with a restricted vocabulary helps in the delivery of engineering concepts.

Our Students
Like the students I taught in the UK, their success largely depends on our ability to motivate and support them.
All of the students on our vocational programmes have a laptop computer, which they, or their families have bought.  Our challenge is to provide them with materials that they can use on their own, that are stimulating and support the delivery of our curriculum.  Publishers of Engineering text books and on line learning materials usually pitch the English language levels so that they are not accessible to our first and second year students.
